There have recently been several letters from designers concerning ethics and responsibility. It is clear to everyone who has read any Noam Chomsky (“arguably the greatest intellectual alive” – New York Times) and anyone who has seen through the propaganda masquerading as our news and culture, that people and planet are being killed by our economic system of profit at any cost. This system’s unquestioned religion is consumerism, fuelled by the advertising and design industry. We as designers must start to recognise our complicity in this system in order to challenge our own beliefs and the system that subordinates people and planet to the drive for profit.
