McConnell chairs 2002 DW Awards

Pentagram partner John McConnell will chair the judging for the 2002 Design Week Awards.

McConnell, who is also design management consultant to Boots the Chemists, will lead some 30 judges to assess work in 22 categories. The Best of Show will be chosen from the category winners.

Winners will be announced at the awards dinner, to be held in London next spring.

Judges already signed up include Mike Dempsey of CDT Design, Jon Turner, executive creative director of Enterprise IG, Peter Knapp, executive creative director of Landor Associates and John Lewis Partnership design consultant Douglas Cooper.

Packaging and branding will be represented by Lewis Moberly creative head Mary Lewis, creative consultant Allison Miguel, Mark Pearce of Springpoint, Harry Pearce of Lippa Pearce and Andy Scott of Vivid.

Print specialists include typographer and illustrator Alan Kitching, Ergo founder Simon John, Pentagram partner Fernando Gutiérrez, Blast founder Martin Cox and Sasha Vidakovic of Conran Design Group.

Interiors will be judged by Ben Kelly, Fitch creative head Tim Greenhalgh, Steve Royle, senior designer at Corsie Naysmith, Jestico & Whiles associate Sniez Torbarina and Conran & Partners architectural director James Soane.

Product design judges include Design Council director of design and innovation Clive Grinyer and Geoff Hollington of Hollington Associates, among others.

Digital design judging will be led by Malcolm Garrett, chairman of AMX. His team will include Tom Roope, creative director of Tomato Interactive, Neil Churcher of Edwards Churcher, and Royal College of Art computer-aided design head Professor Irene McAra-McWilliam, formerly with Philips.

Three new categories have been added to the awards this year. Leisure Environments will cover interiors and branding for hotels, sports centres and the like.

Identity projects are meanwhile divided between Branding and Identity, covering full-blown identity programmes implemented within the past two years, and Letterheads and Logos for smaller identity projects completed over the past 12 months.
