Mandelson and Smith survive

Chris Smith, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, has survived Prime Minister Tony Blair’s first Cabinet reshuffle. But the line-up of ministers at the department will change considerably.

Arts minister Mark Fisher and films and tourism minister Tom Clarke have both been ousted from the department. Replacements had not been announced as Design Week went to press.

Smith will draw up a new list of responsibilities, outlining each minister’s duties, when their identities have been made public.

Former minister-without-portfolio Peter Mandelson takes over from Margaret Beckett at the Department of Trade and Industry to become Secretary of State for Trade and Industry. He retains responsibility for the Millennium Dome at Greenwich.
