LIFT launches performance space contest

The Architecture Foundation and the London International Festival of Theatre are launching a competition – open to designers – to create a £400 000 travelling meeting and performance space.

Called the Lift New Parliament, the construction will be designed with digital interactive capabilities to host performances, debates and ceremonies. It will launch at the 2008 Lift Festival in East London, after which it will travel to the South Bank Centre and international locations.

A key objective is to design a portable, flexible installation according to stringent engineering guidelines, says Angharad Wynne-Jones, director at Lift. Designers can submit entries from 8 May until the deadline of 16 June. A shortlist of four will be announced in June and the winner selected in July. See www.architecturefoundation.org.uk
