Design in 2018 – what will interior design look like?

As part of our series on the future of design in 2018, Airbnb’s environments team co-founder and executive creative director Aaron Taylor Harvey looks at what will happen in interiors over the next 12 months.

What do you think 2018 will hold for interior design?

I believe that working from home will be less socially acceptable as our aspirated selves become less convincing collaborators, and we all realise that we just need to get in a room together and talk. This will mean saturated colours, familiar forms and the haze of ‘90s nostalgia that reminds us of the last moment before mobile phones.

What was your favourite interior design project in 2017?

Interior design should make better the intimate scale of human interaction, and so can only be understood through multiple encounters. I was lucky enough to spend three days on the Vitra Campus in Germany and was repeatedly delighted by the consistent quality across all scales, inside and out. It’s an obvious choice but it should be a pilgrimage for every designer.
