Glasgow 1999 – Sudjic gives us the lowdown…

Helen McCormack might trouble to inform herself a little more about the facts of the Glasgow 1999 identity before making accusations of hypocrisy (Letters, DW 13 December 1996).

The identity which she describes was commissioned by Glasgow City Council long before the Glasgow 1999 organisation was established. There has never been any dispute between 1999 and Graven Images, a consultancy whose work we respect, and which has certainly been paid in full for its Glasgow bid work.

The city took the decision that a logo commissioned for the process of bidding to the Arts Council would not be appropriate for the requirements of the year of architecture and design before I was appointed as director, and I was instructed to develop an identity strategy. This is now coming to fruition in the form of an open competition for the design of a new Glasgow typeface.
