‘You said I must eat so many lemons, cause I am so bitter’, lamented Kate Nash in her irritating pile of Mockney affectation and drivel, Foundations.

Thankfully, London College of Communication’s foundation students’ work is a far cry from this abhorrent load of twaddle, and it is all on display, from today, in a show entitled Wide Open as part of the 2011 Summer Show season.

Studio Myerscough has created the Summer Show identity and design for all exhibition materials.

Work from all 350 Foundation Diploma Art & Design students will be on show covering a huge range of disciplines, including moving image, 3D, photography, surface design, book arts, graphic design and illustration.

Dave Sowerby, Head of Foundation at LCC says, ‘The high standard of work that the students have generated and the effort that each of them has invested in this intensive period of study is really impressive. The show is literally buzzing with ideas!’

Highlights from this year’s cavalcade of talent include Laura Smith’s Sandpit installation, which will see the front of the college transformed into a little seaside with sand, buckets and deckchairs, accompanied by sticks of ‘LCC Rocks’ rock.

The piece invites viewers to create their own sandcastles in the shape of seaside town art institutions including the De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill-on-Sea, the Jerwood in Hastings and the Turner Contemporary in Margate using specially formed buckets.

Meanwhile, Dan Neville’s Unlabelled imagines a world without labels and packaging, creating a simulated retail experience aiming to address sustainability issues. Viewers can have a go at interacting with and identifying the products using a smart phone that can identify barcodes.

Wide Open runs from 11 – 20 April at London College of Communication, Elephant & Castle, London SE1
