Back to Basics flyers

A stalwart of the Leeds club scene for 20 years, iconic house night Back To Basics is renowned for both its music and its flyer artwork – a familiar sight around the city.

Now two decades worth of these flyers have been brought together for exhibition Excess All Areas, which is at Leeds Gallery before travelling to London.

The images were all curated by Back To Basics promoter Dave Beer, in collaboration with designer Nic Gundill, who recalls the pair starting out by hand-cutting the type and using a repromaster camera.

Beer says, ‘I’ve always approached each flyer as a piece of art, prioritising the image and its message over the actual information about the night it was supposed to be promoting.

‘I spent so much time refining the flyers, many were delivered late; so late in fact that the party had often already happened by the time the flyer went to print.’

He adds, ‘I look around at street culture today, at the work of artists like Banksy, and I see a real connection between what we were doing then and what they are doing today.’

Excess All Areas, 20 Years of Back to Basics, is at Leeds Gallery until 19 March. The exhibition will then travel to London.

amazing!! I have 14 years of dancing, working as a ‘busboy’ – to lighting attendant to djing (when asked!) and have a wall full at home… they always absurdly summed up the zeitgeist of the club, sometimes Leeds and a Yorkshire mentality – then the UK…. i’m still going – especially seen as i am actually playing upstairs all eve with my main man – tristan da cunha…. always putting the ‘art’ in party….. despout X
