Serpa wins top Clio honour

The Clio Awards, the US design and advertising festival, has announced it is to bestow its lifetime achievement award this year on creative consultancy Almap BBDO general creative director Marcello Serpa.

The Brazilian art director will receive the award in recognition of his outstanding and ongoing contribution to the creative industry at a formal dinner event on 15 May, at the new Gansevoort South Hotel on Miami Beach, as part of the 49th annual Clio Awards and Festival.

Serpa began his career in Germany, studying visual and graphic arts before doing creative work at consultancies GGK and RG Wiesmeir.

He returned to Brazil to work at the Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo offices of DPZ, before joining DM9 DDB in 1991.

Together with senior account manager and strategic planner José Luiz Madeira, Serpa then became a partner at Almap BBDO, helping to bring on board a roster of blue-chip clients including Volkswagen, Pepsi, Inbev, Bayer, Audi Brazil, Mars Brazil, Gatorade, Havaianas and Greenpeace.

According to the Clio team, Serpa is the ‘most-awarded creative’ in the history of the São Paulo Creative Club Yearbook, and has throughout his time at Almap BBDO seen the consultancy win 45 Clio awards
