Bureau of European Design takes on EC challenge

The European Commission has tasked the Bureau of European Design Associations with creating a series of proposals that could influence design policy over the next few years.

Beda president Jan R Stavik met European Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science Máire Geoghegan-Quinn to discuss the issues last week. The revamped Commission for Research, Innovation and Science recently took over responsibility for design and innovation from the Commission for Enterprise and Industry.

Stavik says, ’We went to Brussels to secure design’s place on the innovation agenda now that it has changed commissions, which we achieved.’ He adds, ’We were then invited to come up with a number of concrete proposals about what can be done to promote design within the European community, which is an unexpected and fantastic challenge.’

Stavik intends to rapidly assemble a think tank consisting of experts in design and policy, to form the new proposals by July. He declines to speculate on the specific nature of the future proposals, but describes them as ’a series of projects, programmes and other practical outcomes’.
