Royal College of Art plans Milan exhibition

London’s Royal College of Art will have a presence at the Milan furniture fair’s Salone satellite exhibition this year, taking residence in a disused factory to present Hotel RCA, a collection of work by 90 students and graduates.

Professor Tord Boontje, Head of Design Products at the RCA, will use the topology of a hotel – such as reception areas, lounges and bedrooms – to present designs in relevant spaces.

Min Kyu Choi’s folding plug – which won best product at the 2010 Brit Insurance Design of The Year Awards – will be on display alongside Maciek Wojicicki’s space-saving Loft workstation and Felix de Pass’ desk.

Bethan Wood, who uses marquetry techniques on laminated furniture, and Claire Ferreira, who has created a ‘downside up’ table with a bio-resin surface, will also display their work.

‘This is a creative opportunity for our students to show their work at an international design event,’ says Boontje.

Graduates from 2009 will ‘showcase their finished products’, and current students will ‘design and build the exhibition’, Boontje adds.
