Spar unveils redesigned own-label ices and wines

Spar supermarket is launching a range of own-brand ice cream, with design by Appetite. The launch comes at the tail end of Appetite’s long-term project to revamp more than 900 Spar own-label products, the last of which will be unveiled today.

The ice cream range includes a premium line, called Spar Premium Ice Cream, as well as a Family and an Everyday line. They will feature windows in the lids so that customers can see the product. All three ranges will be available from next month.

Appetite has also made some adjustments to Spar’s lunchtime, ready meal and prepared vegetable ranges since it first repackaged them, in response to customer feedback.

The supermarket is also about to launch the last of its own-label wine packaging designs, created by Robson Dowry. The Bristol-based consultancy has redesigned Spar’s entire range of wines.

‘Spar is not currently known for its own-label wines so we have tended to err on the side of safe with the label designs, our main goal being to get people to pick them up and not be afraid of them,’ says Spar trading controller for wine, Laura Jewell.

Jewell reveals that Appetite lost the pitch against Robson Dowry to revamp Spar’s wine selection ‘because wine is such a specialist area that I wanted a consultancy with lots of experience in that area’.
