UK designers inspire US students in poster design
International students looking to be schooled in the art and design history of London could do a lot worse then meet Established & Sons, Barber Osgerby, Sir Paul Smith, and National Portrait Gallery director Sandy Nairne.
Art Centre College of Design, in Pasadena, California has for the last few years been sending some of its students on a sort of design pilgrimage to meet these very people on a trip entitled London, Ancient and Modern.
A range of site visits and talks were organised by the university to bring about ‘long term inspiration’ for the students and a broad understanding of British design, according to chairman of ACCD illustration department Ann Field.
This whistle-stop schooling has inspired the students to create exhibition Gold, Silver & Bronze: Olympian Observations from Art Centre College of Design, California, which is billed as an outsider’s view of the London Olympics.
Expressed through a series of posters, the students have captured the likes of knitting marathons, high divers tumbling into teacups and incongruous sport-inspired pub signs.
All of the interpretations have been made into limited edition silk-screen prints, which are available to buy from Kemistry Gallery.
Gold, Silver & Bronze: Olympian Observations from Art Centre College of Design, California runs from 10-26 May at Kemistry Gallery, 43 Charlotte Road, EC2A
