The book has been written by Jade Coles, and tells the stories of nine women rulers – ‘some of the baddest women in Ancient History’, says Belly Kids – through the ages.
However, readers won’t be expected to wade through reams of text – we’re promised the tales have been broken down ‘to a digestible, radical level’.
Among the phenomenal females the book chronicles are Cleopatra, Queen Elizabeth I, Catherine the Great, Empress Dowager Cixi and Queen Njinga Mbande, who certainly sounds like a woman you wouldn’t want to mess with.
‘Queen Njinga Mbande was a natural born killer who was said to have been conceived on the battlefield’, explains Coles.
‘When she ruled, she had armies the size of small countries at her command. With her always was a crew of 60 men, this not including her four personal bodyguards.
‘Before she went into battle she was known to eat the blood of slaves and once she’d won she would shower in her conquered enemies remains. So to be fair she was a pretty brutal woman.’
Among the artists who have illustrated the 50-odd page tome are Ellie Andrews, Alice Tye, Kaye Blegvad, Donya Todd, Charlotte Trounce, Brigid Deacon, Greg Ketsel Molly Askey-Goldbury, Ana Galvan and Bradford Haubrich.
