Dalton Maag to open Egypt office
Font design consultancy Dalton Maag is opening an office in the Egyptian capital Cairo, which it hopes will position the company as an expert in Arabic font design.
The office, which opens on 2 December, will be headed by Mahmoud Hamdy (pictured), who joins the group after running his own design consultancy, FC Studio. He was previously a creative director at advertising agency Publicis.
Hamdy is a native Arabic speaker, and Dalton Maag hopes this will lend it an advantage in creating fonts for the Middle East. Previously, the consultancy’s non-Arabic speaking designers created fonts for the region in its London office.
‘The design principles are the same as with Latin, but with little knowledge or background experience it was necessary to collaborate with native speakers and designers,’ says Dalton Maag senior designer Ron Carpenter.
Hamdy believes that there is a ‘severe shortage of contemporary quality Arabic fonts’. He hopes that the new office will dissuade local designers from downloading free fonts, and encourage them to create new ones instead.
Cairo is Dalton Maag’s second overseas office – last year it opened an outpost in Brazil.
