Design for Patient Dignity briefs are finalised

The Design Council and the Department of Health have finalised the briefs in their Design for Patient Dignity project.

There are seven specific briefs to choose from: separating male and female patients, designing patient wear, designing a dignified toileting experience, retrofitting wards and creating new layouts, dealing with transfer and mobility issuesenabling patient empowerment, and an open brief to design a product service or system to help deliver same-sex accommodation.

Designers are being invited to join forces with manufacturers, service-providers and specialist contractors in up to five teams which will be paid a minimum of £25 000 to develop and prototype new approaches to helping hospitals eliminate mixed-sex accommodation, and helping hospitals maximise privacy and dignity where complete segregation cannot be provided.

Designers and manufacturers can enter at www.designcouncil.org.uk/dignity. The deadline for entries is 26 October.
