John Mathers leaves Blue Marlin

John Mathers has left Blue Marlin Brand Design as chief operating officer, after just 18 months at the consultancy.

As part of a far-reaching management restructure, executive creative director Martin Grimer has been promoted to global creative director. He takes over from Blue Marlin founder David Hodgson, who remains at the group ‘leading a new corporate focus on human resources’, according to a statement from the consultancy.

The group’s UK office has promoted client services director Roger Hart to the post of managing director. He will oversee both the London and Bath offices.

The managing directors of Blue Marlin’s UK, US and Australia offices will report directly to group managing director and chief executive Andrew Eyles ‘to enable the group to respond more swiftly’, he says.

Commenting on Mathers’ departure, Eyles says, ‘He was brought in to provide commercial experience and to put corporate structures in place. He has done that extremely efficiently.’

Mathers joined Blue Marlin last April from his position as chief executive of The Brand Union. His remit was to oversee expansion, as part of the group’s goal of doubling its turnover to £20m in the next five years.
