Magpie Studios wins pitch for online-only Bafta annual review

Magpie Studios has won a six-way pitch to design the Bafta online review of the year – the first year the review will be solely online, and not in print.

The consultancy’s work will replace that of the incumbent Browns Design, which worked over both platforms last year.

Magpie Studios is now tasked with designing a site to showcase Bafta’s activity between June 2009 and June 2010, in an ’accessible, visually appealing and engaging way’, integrating moving image and communicating the work of charity Bafta – ’particularly in education’, according to consultancy director Jamie Ellul.

Describing his son as a ’foetal businessman’, Ellul explains how he was invited to pitch following a chance meeting with Bafta website editor Robert Cawston on an ante-natal course at The Vortex Jazz Club in Dalston.

A June launch is anticipated for the site, which will integrate video content into drop-down menus with text. Site visitors will have the choice of accessing most information as video or text, says Ellul. ’Before, imagery was used apologetically, but we’re planning to use bold photography.’

Cawston adds, ’[Magpie] will take our annual review, which is traditionally a print product, and in a tactile way create something that demonstrates to the public and members that we’re about art and moving image.’
