A round-up of this week’s news in brief.

Karstadt
 

20.20 has designed a retail concept for German department store Karstadt. The flagship store spans five floors and covers 25,000m and sees new designs for womenswear, menswear, kids, and home. Karstadt’s ‘nine box grid’ concept feature is anchored by areas for Denim, Occasionwear, Tailoring, Labels to Watch and Everyday collections. The new designs have been implemented across the entire store, including service desks, store directories and navigation.

Designer Lynn Oxford has died suddenly at the age of 52 Lynn trained at Canterbury College of Art and worked in a number of agencies throughout the 80s and 90s, including Yellow Pencil and Peter Kerr Design, before setting up Lynn Oxford Design which was based in Richmond, Surrey. In recent years she had fulfilled her ambition to move to Australia, where she had settled in Sydney and she was thoroughly enjoying her new life. Lynn was a gentle, kind, thoughtful and generous person who was much loved both in the UK and Australia, and her death has devastated her family and friends. Arrangements are being made to return Lynn’s body to the UK and her funeral will take place in Birmingham. For further details of the funeral arrangements please contact mark@radiusbrand.co.uk.

Consultancy Construct has created the branding and website for Jewellery designer/maker Jacqueline Cullen. The look aims to reflect the jewellery’s ‘beautiful, brave, strong and graphic’ aesthetic, according to Construct.

Chivas Patrick Grant
 

NB Studio has created the packaging for Chivas 12 whisky’s Made for Gentlemen campaign. The consultancy also designed a gift tin for the brand’s collaboration with Patrick Grant of Norton & Sons.

Young people’s health advice and information website urlife.org.uk has been relaunched with a new design by Central Saint Martins 2012 BA Graphic Design graduate Duarte Carrilho da Graca and Interaction Design lecturer Rebecca Ross. The new design is accessible form smartphones, aiming to appeal to more to young people.

IGT logo
 

Landor’s New York office has rebranded International Game Technology (IGT), a Nevada-based company that designs and manufactures gaming machines. Landor says, ‘IGT’s bold new brand is based on attributes such as courageous, reliable, collaborative, ingenious, and pioneering.’

Quinoderm
 

Seymourpowell has created new packaging for acne treatment range Quinoderm. The consultancy was responsible for the redesign of the cream tube and carton, and the bottle label on the face wash.

Manchester-based consultancy The Market Creative has created new branding for jewellery company Shipton & Co. It devised the ‘Colour your world’ campaign, which aims to reflect the origins of the gemstones used in the pieces.

Jerwood Visual Arts has opened its call for entries for Jerwood Makers Open 2014, inviting applied artists from across all craft disciplines to submit proposals for the maker-led commissioning opportunity.  Open to UK residents within 10 years of graduating or setting up their practice, this opportunity will award five artists with bursaries of £7,500, allowing them to freely create new work. This resulting work will be exhibited at Jerwood Space, London next summer before touring the UK.  For more information visit www.jerwoodvisualarts.org

Tavern nuts
 

Greenwich Design has created a new website for Ming Foods, which manufactures and supplies Chinese pancakes. It has also created a new identity for Tavern Snacks, supplier of snacks, crisps and nuts to pubs, restaurants and clubs in London and the South-East. 

Talon.
 

Consultancy ENS Ltd has created a new look for communications agency Talon Outdoor. The designs aim to capture ‘the independent, entrepreneurial spirit’ of the company, according to ENS.

JDO Brand Design and Innovation has appointed Sean Harvey, former design director at JKR, to the role of design director. Harvey joins Ray Smith and Nicky Parr as the third design director at JDO.

JPA Design has appointed Ben Orson as managing director of its London office. Orson, who had originally worked with London and Singapore based JPA from 2002-2010 as design director, has spent the past three years in the US at Zodiac Aerospace as director of industrial design of its premium seat furniture division. 

Great Marlow School
 

Hampshire-based consultancy Design Image has created graphics for the new Sports Centre at Great Marlow School.

The Big Charity Whip Round
 

Consultancy Design Culture has created the new identity for fundraising organisation Workplace Giving UK’s new scheme, The Big Charity Whip Round. Work began on the identity earlier this summer, with the aim of creating an identity that would ‘stand apart from Workplace Giving UK’s core scheme, clearly positioning it as something very different’, says the consultancy.

Oriflame Cosmetics Baby Care

ButterflyCannon has created the branding and packaging for Oriflame Cosmetics’ Baby Care range. The design focuses on this key differentiating ingredient, a simplified cotton plant graphic, and hand written type ‘conveying the products’ softness’, says the consultancy.

Dusted has created the Annual review for Alzheimer’s Society. The concept was to tell the Society¹s story through the story of one family living with dementia through direct speech and photography. The report can be viewed here.
