Illustrators dance to the beat
While Lionel Ritchie has famously extolled the joys of dancing on the ceiling, from this evening east London boozer The Queen of Hoxton is unveiling how its walls have been inspired by dance.
The pub in Shoreditch has briefed 12 artists to transform its exterior walls, inspired by the phrase ‘Dance to the Beat’, creating a semi-permanent exhibition out of the venue.
Curated by Liat Chen, the selected artists have worked in a range of media including screen print, music video, acrylic paint, video animation and paper collage.
Among the artists whose works have been chosen to grace the walls are filmmaker Gary David Roberts. We love his eerily dark aesthetic, shown here with this rather menacing tableau of eyes:
Cheeky Berlin-born, London-based illustrator Beugism will be taking his innuendo-fuelled visuals to the venue, showcasing his quixotic palette of influences, which range from communist murals to Japanese woodcuts to surrealist paintings.
Seamlessly merging the realms of outer space, Disney, New York and meteorological phenomena is designer and illustrator James Andrews, who says he’s inspired by ‘anything clever or something which might provoke the audience.’ What he’ll make of the ‘Dance to the Beat’ brief is yet to be seen…
Dance to the Beat opens from 7pm on 24 October, entry is free. It will be on show until April 2013 at the Queen of Hoxton, 1-5 Curtain Road, EC2A
