Made North Gallery
New to Sheffield is the Made North gallery, which opened last week at Yorkshire Artspace in the city.
Run by the team behind the Made North Conference, which was held earlier this year in Liverpool, the gallery aims to promote new and experimental work from established and emerging Northern designers.
Its two opening exhibitions set the tone. So alongside Lazerian/Six – a retrospective of work by Manchester-based furniture group Lazerian (which features a 3x3m carbon fibre chandelier) – is the first in Made North’s series of Launchpad shows, with this one introducing work by young Sheffield designer Daniel Schofield.
Upcoming shows include Northern Revolutions, which will show 50 of the all-time best Northern record sleeves, and a show by The Designers Republic’s Ian Anderson, which may even feature a new range of TDR furniture…
Gallery curator Patrick Murphy, who is also director of Made North parent group Culture North, says, ‘The idea of the gallery is basically to address some of the issues that came out of the Made North conference about how to represent Northern design and making, and making people think about design.’
Murphy says that as well as running exhibitions, workshops and seminars, it will also be the base for projects such as Northern Industrial, a new furniture label that will Northern designer work on furniture made from disused industrial material.
Murphy says, ‘We’re interested in projects that, for example, unite graphics and furniture.’
Murphy has also created a Made North ‘M’ marque, that will be used by the gallery. He says, ‘I wanted to create something with a sense of making and an industrial look.’
Lazerian/Six runs until 30 November and Launchpad: Daniel Schofield until 12 November at Made North Gallery, Yorkshire Artspace, Persistance Works, 21 Brown Street, Sheffield S1.
