Charlotte Newey – Artist Residence

Inspired

Living and working in Cornwall has itself been my source of inspiration. It sounds funny, but getting away from the hustle and bustle of London has been truly refreshing.

Despite being brought up in Devon, the daily grind of city life made me forget the calm and peaceful coast. Cornwall brought this back to me. The captivating light is breathtaking and there is nothing more revitalising than waking up to the stunning scenery.

It is no surprise that some of Britain’s most creative minds – JMW Turner, Daphne du Maurier and Barbara Hepworth – have long been drawn to Cornwall’s rugged beauty.

The most inspiring place in Cornwall? The Minack Theatre.

The most inspiring person? Rowena Cade, its founder and builder. Cade had a vision and, against the odds, she built this magical open-air theatre out of a cliff until she was in her mid-80s, improving the theatre every winter, even in treacherous conditions.

Her dedication and realisation of a vision is what inspires me – to pursue a goal, create something astonishingly beautiful and make a dream a reality.
Artist Residence is my Minack Theatre. I hope you all enjoy Artist Residence: to inspire and invigorate.
