Next is set to overhaul its stores in a reported £40m revamp with Dalziel & Pow. Can design rejuvenate its fortunes?

Yes, of course, design can rejuvenate its fortunes. The existing interiors are pretty awful – shabby, dated and dull. The growing Next Directory business is evidence of a strong product. Therefore, with the right mix of vision and commitment, from both client and design team, the high street retail operation can be turned round. What kind of designer does not believe in the enormous transformative power of good design?

An interiors overhaul, based on a solid brand proposition, could certainly help the performance of Next. Of Next’s 418 000m2 of retail space, I would imagine that at least half needs attention, which would give Dalziel & Pow a whopping £180 per m2 to play with. If it is going to change more than a few light bulbs it’ll be interesting to see where and how it prioritises the revamp and what else Next does to reinspire its high street customers.
