Plea for unity from Halifax

A call to give the design industry a unified voice has come from delegates at last week’s conference at Dean Clough, Halifax on design representation. An initiative to address this issue has been set up to explore how to structure the “voice”.

Dubbed the Halifax Initiative, after the conference venue, the venture will also seek to boost UK design’s global influence through a knowledge-based programme of activities. Ideas include a University for Design and a comprehensive Internet network.

Funding and timescales are under discussion, but Design Council chief executive Andrew Summers has pledged continued financial support for the initiative from the council.
