BCN: MCR

While the famously rainy, matchstick man-lined streets of Manchester may not immediately draw the most obvious parallels with the Gaudi-peppered sunshine of Barcelona’s boulevards, designer and curator Dave Sedgwick thinks otherwise.

‘Both Barcelona and Manchester are cosmopolitan, European cities with a creative and flourishing design community and a distinctive identity’, says Sedgwick.

‘So I decided it would be a great idea to bring Barcelona to Manchester. So to speak!’

Sedgwick’s chosen import cargo certainly looks to bring a little it of Spanish fiesta to his northwest hometown – a display of gorgeous graphic design from five Barcelona-based design consultancies.

Sedgwick says, ‘It was an idea I had wanted to pursue for a while and having visited Barcelona on several occasions before; I have always been really inspired by the design scene and the work of these five very different agencies in particular, whom I really admire.’

The show, entitled BCN:MCR, will see Hey Studio, Lamosca, Lo Siento, Mayuscula Brands and Mucho make their UK exhibition debut. Each consultancy was given a letter from the exhibition title acronym, and was tasked with forming a creative response in whatever way they wanted.

Sedgwick will take on letter number six, referencing the relationship between the two cities that the show looks to highlight.

A representative from each group will be giving a talk on their work, influences, styles and the design scene in Barcelona and Spain in general on the first Friday of the show.
