Street life

As The Photographers’ Gallery moves out of its London home while it is closed for an £8.7m redevelopment project, the off-site programme is well underway.

From the beginning of this month, the gallery has commenced a year-long collaboration with Sophie Howarth and Stephen McLaren, the authors of Street Photography Now, which will see leading photographers set weekly briefs for fellow artists.

Each week, a street photographer featured in the book will issue a task via email to participating photographers, who will respond to the brief in just six days and upload their work to the gallery’s Flickr account.

The aim of the project is to build up a community of photographers that explore photography as a medium for documenting public life.

The photographer who has made the most outstanding contribution to the project will be awarded £1000 of Thames & Hudson books and will have their work displayed at The Photographers’ Gallery, when it reopens in autumn 2011.
