Knighthood anyone?

There was a touching moment at the Design Council last night when Anthony Simonds-Gooding ‘officially’ received his CBE – a massive cross-shaped gong that any respectable jeweller would be proud of.

Eulogies abounded at a soirée convened by Design Council chief executive David Kester, with Richard Seymour speaking out for the design sector, which with advertising and charity work, has kept the ebullient former D&AD chairman busy for more than the 17 years of his D&AD tenure.  But then the moment came.

Simonds-Gooding declared that as he’d had the honour bestowed at Buckingham Palace by Prince Charles, he felt the need to have the medal placed around his neck by his ‘queen’. So his wife Marjorie did the honours to rapturous applause from the audience.

The only question is, should Simonds-Gooding go on to get the knighthood his many fans believe he so richly deserves, will the missus by suitably adept with a sword? Start practising now, Marjorie. Otherwise, it could get messy.
