There seems to have been some misunderstanding of my position on the proposals in the Dearing report (DW 25 July). I do not believe that “colleges will have to become more efficient”. Anyone who has had any contact with colleges over the last few years, and has seen tutors trying (and amazingly often succeeding) to […]
ACID, the Anti Copying In Design group which defends members suffering from copycat behaviour, is working on 13 “me too” cases. Most of its successful cases have been settled out of court, resulting in high-profile settlements with companies including retailers Oasis and Next. At a seminar held by ACID last week several delegates said they […]
The Halifax Initiative is looking to establish a single body representing designers by summer 1998. Discussions are already underway with potential backers for the venture. It is not yet known what form the new body will take or whether it will incorporate existing bodies such as the Chartered Society of Designers and Design Business Association. […]
Marks and Spencer will be appointing design groups to handle the conversion of the 19 former Littlewoods stores it has agreed to buy. The sites are close to, or in some cases adjoining, existing M&S stores. A spokeswoman for the retailer says it may use design consultancies local to individual stores.
The motor industry is undergoing a flurry of design activity, with a number of international groups using or considering UK consultancies for new projects. Volkswagen Group has drawn up a five-strong shortlist to create interiors, signage and graphics for a major visitors centre in Wolfsburg, Germany. Two US and three European design groups, including at […]

Torres has been bought out of parent company Totem Group, an umbrella body for graphics, below-the-line and promotions consultancies, and will be integrated into Revolution’s retail division. Torres graphics design director Gavin Ferguson becomes head of […]
Working out how much to charge a client is one of the most sensitive areas of the design industry. Jane Lewis looks into some of the pitfalls and examines the merits of finding a consistent formula for job costing.
Market-leading supermarket group Tesco is holding a pitch for a huge own-brand packaging project, as part of a massive restructuring of its own-brand design process. There is a possibility of further redundancies within the chain’s design department. Pentagram and Coley Porter Bell are believed to be included in the competition, which is thought to encompass […]
International Marketing and Promotions has designed new artwork for Coca-Cola’s Fanta cans and bottles to back a promotion running from 11 August. IMP has added a ‘window’ device in bottles. The IMP work was added to the original Fanta labelling designed by Big Fish.
With reference to your article on screen graphics (DW 20 June), you might be interested in McIlroy Coates’ campaign identity brochure of 1989. There does seem to be a striking similarity to the final identity of Channel 5. Andrew Hunter Redpath Edinburgh EH1
I read Matthew Valentine’s article (DW 18 July) about the Science Museum Wellcome Wing with some satisfaction. It is interesting to find a client requesting an approach which some of us have been advocating for quite a while. In fact, precisely such a consortium already exists here in Edinburgh and encompasses those disciplines identified by […]
